Globally renowned for his productions on labels such as Kompakt, Harthouse, K2, Plastic City and Audiomatique and live sets that have taken him from Cocoon to DC10 and beyond, ‘Addicted Volume 2’ is, surprisingly, Gui Boratto’s first ever mix CD. Fusing together a subtle, rhythmic and melodic collection of modern electronic compositions that segue from minimal tones to hypnotic tech-house grooves we find Gui steering between the likes of Stephan Bodzin, Minilogue, SuperMayer, Oliver Koletzki & Kiki, Jamie Anderson, The Field and Sascha Funke with a few of his own new productions thrown in for added measure. Fitting somewhere between the nocturnal grooves of a late night DJ set and the eye squinting dawn of the after-hours party scene, Gui Boratto delivers a beautiful and beguiling, flowing mix that sucks you into the next day.
Born in 1974, Sao Paulo producer Gui Boratto grew up listening to new wave and electro – although we’re talking emotional stadium electro like Depeche Mode rather than big room electro here. “I don’t like electro much,” shrugs Gui. “Actually, let me explain: I don’t like poor electro, I think it’s for really young people! I like rock ‘n’ roll and eighties new wave artists like Echo And The Bunnymen and Depeche Mode.”
His musical upbringing totally informs the colours and shapes he makes and unearths himself. The warmth and strength of a classic melody and rich synth lines flow through his productions. Records that sync perfectly in key and mid-tempo rhythms that connect on Cocoon and DC10 floors alike: these are the elements Gui is drawn to. “People can really hear what I’m into on this CD,” he says. “But because I’m not a DJ, I approached this as a musician. I am always working in my studio so I don’t have the time to go to the store!”
Now 33 years old, Gui recently released his debut album on Kompakt, ‘Chromophobia’, which was instantly bestowed Album Of The Month status in Mixmag. Located at the heart of the LP, the super-melodic ‘Beautiful Life’ is the sound of sweeping chords working in perfect harmony. It’s already an end–of-night anthem at Pure Pacha in Ibiza. “Everybody is into this music and it’s really amazing. ‘Liebe Ist’ by Stephan Bodzin is a spectacular, timeless piece of music (included in this mix). I also included fresh tracks like ‘Guimba’ which I just produced with Anderson Noise.”
Recorded on Ableton mid-way through the summer, Gui’s mix is an electronic diary of a year in music. It’s not necessarily minimal, it’s more warm, open and inviting than that. Joining the dots between key labels like Kompakt, Get Physical and Systematic, this is a pure two-hour insight into Gui’s inner hard drive. At times – as on Stephan Bodzin’s ‘Liebe Ist’ (‘Love Is’), it also contains some of the best elements of classic trance. What Addicted also does is display the emotional, rhythmical element to a sound that’s making techno sexy again.
As a two hour musical journey, Addicted makes for a serene home-listening experience. It’s also a cheap way to get an insight into Gui’s tour diary without having to pay for a bundle of air tickets. But it does get a little angry when ‘Elephants Parade’ by Minilogue charges into ear-shot. “I really admire Minilogue and SuperMayer (AKA Aksel Schaufler and Michael Mayer), two of the most pure producers out there. They’re really honest with their taste and have a strong musical personality. But each track has its own story. With SuperMayer, for example, Michael and I did a little US tour together and when he played ‘Two Of Us’ everyone would freak out.”
Integrity, honesty, synthesizers, studios and rock ‘n’ roll rule Gui Boratto’s world. Which just leaves one crucial element. Would you describe your music as techno? “Yes,” he answers, slowly. “It’s slow, melodic techno. With a lot of synthesizers!” His new wave heroes would be proud.

Of his fruitful union with ‘At The Controls’, Sebastien had the following to say: "It’s a double mix CD but it's not only two DJ mixes, it’s more like the soundtrack of my July summer tour. During one month of travels, festivals, meetings, parties and crazy mornings I’ve recorded lots of sounds, atmospheres, noises, talking humans and machines. Only the main ‘extra noises’ I added are featured on the tracklist, but there are lots of hidden sounds, noises and words everywhere on both CDs. I reworked many of those to marry them totally to the music. Thanks to all the people, animals, materials who allowed themselves to appear! It was really fun. This is baroque? This is the sixth finger!"
Agoria is one of the most distinctive and original voices to emerge from the ever-fertile French electronic scene. Strongly influenced by jazz and Detroit techno, Sebastien began his careering DJing at international clubs alongside such luminaries as Jeff Mills and Carl Cox. His debut album Blossom was heralded as a techno masterpiece, while his latest LP, The Green Armchair, redefined him as nothing less than an untouchable modern electro innovator.

Bugged Out are pleased to announce that our next Bugged Out Mix has been compiled by Klaxons and is out on Oct 1st. CD1 is A Bugged Out Mix and is the kind of dj set you would hear if Jamie Reynolds were to take to the decks of a club at 2am featuring lots of trippy techno from Johannes Heil, Da Boogieboys and Luke Vibert. It also features Justice’s ‘Stress’ and some vintage Chemical Brothers (It Doesn’t Matter from 1997’s Dig Your Own Hole, one of their first Electronic Battle Weapons). The mix concludes with an exclusive, unreleased mix of Klaxons Not Over Yet by Brodinski which is spliced with some spoken word ramblings from one of the bands formative influences Aleister Crowley. The Bugged In Selection is a fascinating insight into the band and what music makes them tick. Dave Gahan makes a dynamic return on 22nd October with 'Hourglass' - his eagerly awaited second solo album. Best known as the iconic frontman of Depeche Mode, he continues his impressive career with a blazing new side-project, which follows his critically acclaimed solo debut 'Paper Monsters'.
Produced by Dave with Christian Eigner & Andrew Phillpott, both members of the Depeche Mode touring band, 'Hourglass' also reflects Gahan's growth as a songwriter. Initially showcased with 2003's 'Paper Monsters', he later wrote 3 stellar tracks for Depeche Mode's recent 2 million selling 'Playing The Angel' - 'I Want It All', 'Suffer Well' & 'Nothing's Impossible'.
Hourglass highlights include the gospel-tinged 'Saw Something', which kick-starts the album with stealth before effortlessly setting the tone for the other 9 tracks. "That was the catalyst that started the idea to write again," Dave recalls, adding that is was also "the first lyric, and the key to open the door to thinking, 'Okay, I can go here.'"
Other standout moments include the exhilarating, tour de force roar of 'Deeper and Deeper', the soaring epic first single 'Kingdom' (out on 8th October) and the addictive pull of 'Use You', where he scathingly lets loose his disgust with people, and specifically, himself. Meanwhile, on 'Down' - perhaps the most confessional song on the record - he confesses "I feel so old, down on the ground is where I'm bound to end up."
Sonically, the record cuts across a range of influences and styles with grace. Decidedly more electronic than his previous solo work, he has seamlessly swapped the guitar of 'Paper Monsters' for the synthesizer he epitomizes so well.
"It doesn't feel so much that the band is my identity anymore, although I owe everything to it. I'm starting to really feel that I have my own voice, and it's definitely coming out in the songs. For me, it's the best possible record I could make at this time. And it's gone well beyond what I expected of myself."

Layo & Bushwacka's love affair with music started as teenagers at the dawn of acid house; it’s led both of them through techno, breakbeat, electro, dub, electronica, and any other pigeonhole that’s been thrown up in its wake.
