Royksopp's debut album is a frost-laced spider's web of funk ambient, electric and synthesized soul. Described by Sven abd Torbjorn themselves as an album of 'audio psalms', the invitation here is to soak in the sauna of melancholic grooves. Whether it's cantering along with the sleigh-ride that is 'Poor Leno' or exchanging pleasantries with over-hyped angels on 'Sparks', 'Melody A.M.' takes the low-slung rhythms of, say, Lemon Jelly right up to the next celestial level.

Before this album came along dance fans hadn’t thought of looking to Norway for the next big thing. And isn’t just when you’re not looking that the best things come along? ‘Melody AM’ gave us grown up, leftfield electronic music more for the chillout room than the dancefloor although ensuing, jumped-up mixes of hits like ‘Poor Leno’ put a kick into their laid-back vibe. Apart from being a great album to own this a LP helped open the floodgates for a rash of Norweigans including Erland Oye and Annie. - DJ Magazine
