Last year, MIDNIGHT JUGGERNAUTS released their debut album DYSTOPIA independently in their native Australia, to huge acclaim and success. Now that the album is coming to the rest of the world through Capitol/EMI, Institubes is following up on ROAD TO RECOVERY and its remix companion with new single SHADOWS. Vincent (vox/keys), Andy (guitars/vox) and drummer Daniel Stricker have everything going for them: airplay on Radio 1, support from the Ed Banger cabal (Justice invited them on their world tour throughout the end of 2007), remixes for !!!, Dragonette and VHS Or Beta... They were one of the must see bands at CMJ in New York and their tours have taken them from arenas to festivals to small warehouse gigs playing with bands such as Klaxons, !!!, Crystal Castles, The Pixies, Holy Fuck, Surkin, with the jewel in America's festival crown-Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival-coming up next, as well as an extensive run of shows in the UK, Europe, US and Japan planned to coincide with DYSTOPIA's international release.
SHADOWS is one of those rare instant standards. Too many electro/rock acts these days aim for fashionably dishevelled, pock-faced, amateur swagger. To our delight, MIDNIGHT JUGGERNAUTS want more. They reach for pop majesty. They want their basslines to be as big and timeless as it gets, and when they do disco, it has to be on a galactic scale. SHADOWS is one of DYSTOPIA’s clear winners (in an album litteraly lit up with highlights), an epic and redemptive song.
In the face of such brilliance, the remixer must feel uncomfortably inadequate. But for a newcomer (we released his debut 12” a couple months ago), DAVID RUBATO shows no sign of trepidation as he tackles the track and whips out his trusty flute (yes, flute). He goes as far as recording a new and gloriously uplifting bassline, additional vocoderized vocals and makes the most of the angelic falsetto chorus of the original. Classic.
