THINKINGOUTLOUDASIA is a series of CD Compilations from some of the best clubs in asia. The first in this exciting new project is Zouk in Singapore.
The other citys we are showcasing in this series are:
TOKYO - SHANGHAI - TAIPEI - SEOUL- KUALA LUMPUR.
ZOUK, no longer just a name that signifies a warehouse-turned-dance club in Singapore, has evolved into an international renowned clubbing institution. Say “Zouk” and the implication is of thousands of bodies writhing to one perfect rhythm, one perfect sound.
In 1991, inspired by the Balearic sounds of the Mediterranean club scene, Zouk set out with just one dancefloor and slowly cultivated a following for its cutting edge music policy. By the mid-90s, Zouk had opened two rooms, Velvet Underground and Phuture, to accommodate dance music’s expanding sub-genres.
These days, a weekend at the club provides punters with everything from deep house to progressive house, minimal to paedophile, tech house to techno, funk & soul to nu jazz and broken beats, hip hop to breaks. It is an experience that has many a DJ applauding the Zouk experience, which in turn has led to Zouk’s rise in the international scene.
Known to locals to have defined the soundtrack for a generation, Zouk’s allure is its innovative and progressive clubbing environment, which top international publications such as DJ Magzaine, IDJ, Mixmag, Muzik, The Face, Arena, Time Out, Wired, Time, Elle, Vogue and Wallpaper, have all continually ranked Zouk as one of the Best Clubs in the World. . .
The guy at the helm for most of this is Aldrin, booking manager and resident DJ extraordinaire.
If Zouk has a musical ambassador, it’s Aldrin. Since beginning his residency in ’96, he’s become Singapore’s most internationally prominent DJ, flying the Zouk flag throughout the four corners of the world, garnering acclaim at every stop from press, punters and fellow DJs alike. Aldrin’s global profile is bolstered by the reputation he commands on home turf – especially since Muzik cited him as “one of the world’s finest residents”. Having played a crucial role in building up the vibrant dance scene in Singapore, Aldrin packs out the club with faithful fans every month on his headline night “One”.
Prior to this, Aldrin’s plaudit list was already nothing short of impressive, having begun the millennium as the first Asian to be Muzik’s DJ of the Month and being named “a contender for Best New DJ” . Following that, he became the first Asian DJ to appear on the cover of Muzik Magazine, with credit for mixing the magazine’s “most on-form CD” . All this, along with Danny Tenaglia singling him out as his DJ hero propelled Aldrin onto the international platform.
Renowned for his massive percussive-tribal-tech house fusion style, Aldrin has consistently thrilled crowds of thousands with his flawless, genre bending sets. At the same time, he has proved versatile and innovative, developing his own deeper, more organic house set for smaller and more intimate settings. Abroad, Aldrin has been spreading his vibes in Asia, Europe, and North America, becoming a regular in-demand guest fixture at nights such as Renaissance in London, Pacha, Space and DC10 in Ibiza, plus a special appearance at Tenaglia’s Be Yourself night in New York.
Adored for his music by a faithful and growing following in Asia and fast gaining unanimous global recognition as one the finest DJs anywhere, Aldrin has set a massive impact on the global dance scene.
In fact, Aldrin has been referred as Asia’s number one DJ to catch in Ibiza this summer . Between his residency at Zouk (where he is also the DJ booking manager by day) and his increasingly hectic global DJ schedule, Aldrin has been working on producing his own music. Currently, he is also working on the Zouk mix CD compilation, which is forthcoming in April 2007.
